Aqara’s M3 hub arrives.

The latest gadget from the smart home company is a multi-protocol Matter powerhouse, packing Thread, Zigbee, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and IR control.

The $130 M3 hub was announced at CES and launches today. It’s one of the first Matter controllers from a company not called Amazon, Apple, Google, or Samsung.

I’ve been testing it for the last week and have a review coming soon.

Google starts hiding search results count.

It’s under the Tools menu if you really need to know that the search giant found about 39,900,000 results in 0.73 seconds for “kim kardashian booed.”

Red solar panels cometh.

Instead of defacing clay tile roofs with standard blue or black solar panels, these 400W double-glass panels from Austria-based Sonnenkraft are available in terracota red, yet still claim a 20.02 percent conversion efficiency.

I guess Tesla is still working out the kinks with its red roof solution promised back in 2016.

HMD is re-releasing the Nokia 3210, the classic phone from the late 90’s, with modern-day upgrades like 4G and some fresh colors. Under the nostalgic skin it looks every bit like your average feature phone, running unspecified “Cloud Apps” for news and weather.

Looks fun, but seems like an impractical option unless you’re ready for a serious digital detox. It won’t be sold in the US, either.

The first Boeing Starliner flight with astronauts is delayed again.

The Crew Flight Test was scrubbed Monday night just as the astronauts settled into position, but now NASA says the launch will be pushed back by a couple of weeks, at least.

NASA’s Boeing Crew Flight Test now is targeted to launch no earlier than 6:16 p.m. EDT Friday, May 17, to the International Space Station. Following a thorough data review completed on Tuesday, ULA (United Launch Alliance) decided to replace a pressure regulation valve on the liquid oxygen tank on the Atlas V rocket’s Centaur upper stage.

What's next for Bluesky?

Even without one Jack Dorsey, the social platform does have some new features on the roadmap, including:

DMs, video, improved Custom Feeds, better anti-harassment features, and a new login tool called "OAuth"

These are coming "over the next few months," with a plan for off-protocol, one to one direct messages, and 90 second video clips.

OpenAI is entering the search game.

OpenAI is developing a search engine for ChatGPT, giving users the ability to crawl the web for answers to their questions, Bloomberg reports. Sources also tell The Verge that OpenAI has been aggressively trying to poach Google employees for a team that is working hard to ship the product soon.

Reddit’s CEO confirms that a lot of user growth is coming from Google Search.

Reddit’s daily users grew 37 percent to 82.7 million during its first quarter as a public company. CEO Steve Huffman said on the earnings call that 60 percent of those users are logged out and coming mostly from Google.

“Googlebot likes speed” and Reddit has focused on improving load times, he said. More on the numbers below:

Logitech’s updated iPad keyboards are the ones for school lab carts.

Funding tech in education is tough. Luckily those fresh new iPad Airs can be paired with Logitech’s updated Combo Touch keyboards that are cheaper than Apple’s and can lighten up that purchase order total.

The 11-inch version is $199.95 and the 13-inch is $229.95, and they offer great protection for K-12. There’s iPad Pro versions, too, for fancy private schools.

Did Asus just stealth-reveal its next ROG Ally handheld?

First Asus quietly changed the name of its original handheld to “ROG Ally (2023),” then VideoCardz obtained an internal document mentioning an “ROG Ally 2024.” Now, the community has spotted a black ROG Ally in a new post from Asus itself.

This is a company that loves to tease — remember, the first Ally was introduced on April Fools’.

The original ROG Ally was white... so this is likely a skin, an unreleased prototype, or a new device. We asked, but haven’t heard back yet.

Voice Moods is starting to show up in the newest Google Messages beta.

First announced in November, the feature lets you attach an emoji to audio messages. It only works with RCS messaging, according to 9to5Google.

The update also brings a redesigned voice recorder that adds a new noise cancellation button. No word on when the full rollout will happen, but we’re betting on hearing more at Google I/O on May 14th.

Chime must pay $4.55 million for taking too long to refund customers.

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) ordered the online banking service to pay the penalty after customers waited “weeks or months” to access their funds after closing their accounts.

Chime will pay $1.3 million to customers affected by the delays, while the remaining $3.25 million penalty will go toward the CFPB’s victims relief fund.

The Intercept wants its day in court.

In its response to OpenAI’s motion to dismiss its lawsuit, The Intercept claims it has the right to prove OpenAI violated some provisions of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) by copying its articles.

Much like the hallucinations to which their products are prone, defendants ignore or mischaracterize both the applicable law and the allegations of the complaint. The Intercept is entitled to its day in court.

Valve just made fast, furious, precise aiming easier than ever with Steam Deck.

Ever heard of Flick Stick, which rotates your camera a number of degrees when you flick a joystick that way? How about gyro aiming to precisely nudge a crosshair simultaneously? New “Dots per 360” and “Turn Camera 360” features make calibrating them easy. Add the new “Turn to Face Direction” key, and you can instantly face whichever direction you’ve been strafing.

Of course Tim Cook had ‘Made on iPad’ Nike kicks.

For one, he’s a board member at Nike. But according to Hypebeast, Cook had one-of-a-kind pair of Nike Air Max 1 ‘86s. On the tongue, there’s a lil handwritten “made on iPad” and the iconic swoosh features a rainbow stitching that looks like it was drawn with an Apple Pencil Pro.

The sneaks are real cute, but unfortunately, you can’t buy ‘em. Unless you can convince Cook to part with his.

Some of Logic Pro’s AI features will work on Macs, too.

Apple focused on the iPad for its pro audio software release today, but the Mac got some love, too.

Provided you’re running an Apple silicon Mac, both Stem Splitter, which tasks AI with separating drums, bass, vocals, and “other instruments” into four parts, and its AI-powered ChromaGlow reverb effect will be available in the May 13th update.

Here’s that unannounced Beats Pill speaker again — this time spotted in an iOS beta.

iOS betas have a long history of revealing upcoming Beats products. True to form, today’s iOS 17.5 release candidate build contains images and animations of the Beats Pill portable speaker that’s been seen on the arms of star athletes in recent weeks.

I wouldn’t expect it soon soon, but it’s clearly on the way.

The iOS and iPadOS 17.5 release candidate developer beta is now available.

The release candidate signifies that Apple is wrapping up this round of betas before the update goes to everyone. It’s fairly minor for the US, adding things like Apple’s next Pride wallpaper and a new Apple News puzzle game.

It’s much more significant for the EU, where updated iPhones will now be able to download apps straight from the web.

AI Met Gala pictures apparently fooled Katy Perry’s mom.

The singer reshared fake AI images of herself at the Met Gala — an event she didn’t attend — along with a text showing her own mom fell for the synthetic image that was circulating. The official Instagram account commented, “a TRUE goddess.” Unclear if the person running it realized it was AI.

Watch out for the AI Met Gala disinformation!

Asus will announce an “AI PC” the same day as Microsoft.

Microsoft’s Surface and AI event is coming May 20th, expected to reveal the consumer Surface Pro 10 and Surface Laptop 6, featuring Qualcomm chips that could (maybe?) give Apple a run for its money. But Asus will have such a Qualcomm laptop too. To make sure you’re aware, it’ll do its own virtual launch at 11am PT that day.

Google Cloud is adding more salespeople to try to get companies to buy AI.

Google Cloud created two new AI-focused sales teams and is hiring more staff, reports The Information. The teams will try to convince businesses to use more (and spend more money on) AI, a space that competitors like Amazon have been focusing all their efforts on.
